Nothing above the fourth row changes a result you could not already reach. Price lists are built to be read upward, which is how the middle option looks reasonable next to a top tier nobody expects you to take. That is not an argument against buying it, only against expecting it to fix a cup.

Vessel material is real, and it is not a ranking

Utensils do change the liquid. A study combining sensory evaluation with HPLC across different tea sets found that tin vessels gave relatively higher amino acid content and a fresher taste, porcelain gave higher polyphenols, soluble carbohydrates and water extract with more sweetness and thickness, and purple sand suited oolong and dark tea, with the conclusion that different utensils suit different tea types.

Read that as a matching problem rather than a quality ladder. Porcelain for black tea and unglazed clay for roasted oolong is a defensible pairing. Buying the most expensive pot for everything is not.

Why preheating beats buying

The cheapest technique in tea beats most purchases, and the reason is physics. Water has a high specific heat: the USGS puts it at 4,184 joules to raise one kilogram by one degree Celsius, far more than most substances need.

That cuts both ways. Your water carries a lot of heat, and a cold ceramic pot takes a real share of it the moment you pour. Rinsing the pot with hot water first costs nothing and keeps your recorded brewing temperature honest. Measuring what your own kettle and pot actually deliver is the first item on the equipment floor a box assumes. No vessel you can buy fixes a ten degree drop you did not measure.

Where money is genuinely well spent

  • A kettle that holds a set temperature, if you drink green tea daily.
  • A pot you can pour off cleanly and completely, which prevents the last-cup problem.
  • Enough small cups to run comparisons.
  • Tea, rather than equipment, once the basics are covered.

Is a clay pot worth it?

For roasted oolong and dark tea, it can be. Unglazed clay is porous, so it is usually dedicated to one type of tea and not washed with soap.

Does a glass pot make worse tea?

No. Glass is neutral and lets you watch the leaf, which is genuinely useful while you are learning.

Should I buy a gaiwan?
